Tournament Report - Rotterdam 24/5 2014

The Savage Wave warband

Yusha the Vindictive

Tra-Peng

Wu-Zang

Zung Fu

Tribal brute

Giant Cave Bat

Card - Cloud of Bats

The pre-chosen scenarios were Idols, Ryodo and the Envoy.

My general plan for the scenarios with objectives to contest was to use Darkness and Shadow Walk to get to a favourable position. The Cave Bat was to be paired with Tra-Peng on one flank using Tra-Peng to stun and outnumber for the Cave Bat, Yusha and the inspired Brute to always go middle, Zung Fu to take the other flank alone mostly as harrasser and Wu-Zang would join up where needed after focusing on the first turn. For the Envoy I planned to nominate a model with a Ki stat of 1 with high health and send Wu-Zang to poison it down to 1 health. Leaving room for melee damage and forcing my opponent to play aggressively.

----

Savage Wave vs the Ito Clan on Idols.

Masunagi Ito

Kenzo Ito

Sakura + Healing Balm

Hitoshi

Temple Bushi

Kazuhiko

Card - Orochis Gaze

Turn 1 starts with Wu-Zang focusing and activating Darkness. With the Itos sight limited the bakemonos flood up the field with ease. On the right flank Tra-Peng runs and shadow walks up to the idol in one activation turning it in the next. On the left Zung Fu runs and shadow walks putting himself in the position to, at next activation, shadow walk and turn the idol. In the middle the brute is semi stupid and lost behind while Yusha gets to the idol.

Turn 2 the Temple Bushi goes for the central idol. Yusha decides to get him out of there before he can turn it, moves up but fails the throw attack. Masunagi wants to join the battle but hesitates while the Cave Bat decides to tie up Kenzo on the right flank both wounding and poisoning each other. When Masunagi finally gets in there on his second attempt he manages to put several wounds on the poor oni. The Brute arrives at the scene just to be immediatly immobilized by Hitoshi. On the left flank Zung Fu does his best to keep Kazuhiko occupied and a Bakemono Spearmen is summoned for support. First victory point goes to the Wave and the right flank idol is removed,

Turn 3 things start to get interesting. In the middle a hard battle is fough by Yusha who, with the help of a successful curse by Wu-Zang and Tra Pengs stun, manages to throw Masunagi into the Temple Bushi and as the Bushi gets up throw him into Hitoshi. The Brute breaks free from it's immobilized state and moves to cover the middle idol though not smart enough to turn it. Forcing Tra Peng, who luckily was heading for the center, to do so. On the right the Cave Bat is losing to Kenzo due to the lost support of Tra Peng and Sakura healing his adversary. On the left flank Kazuhiko kills Fung Zu and is then killed by the Bakemono Spearman.

Turn 4 things start to fall apart. In the middle Yusha tries to make short work of Masunagi but falls 1 wound short and as the previously shambled Ito forces re-engage in full strenght Yusha is killed by Masunagi. The Brute is killed by Hitoshi shortly afterwards leaving Tra-Peng alone in the center. On the right flank Kenzo makes short work of the Cave Bat and moves for the center. Enough activations where spent though and through some sidesteping Tra-Peng manages to keep the remaning ones from turning the idol more than to neutral. From the left the Bakemono moves for the center to support Tra-Peng. Second victory point goes tot he Wave and the left flank idol is removed.

Turn 5 pass quickly as Tra-Peng is killed and the center idol is turned to the Ito.

Turn 6 even quicker as the last remaining brave Spearman is mashed by the combined, and thanks to Sakura, almost unscatched Ito warband. The last victory point goes to the Ito Clan giving the Wave a 2 – 1 win.

MVM

Yusha the Vindictive for standing his ground in the middle alone for so long.

Sakura for keeping everyone but Kazuhiko alive.

----

Savage Wave vs Silvermoon Syndicate on Ryodo.

Manu, Buto Bodyguard + Arashi's Fan

Harukichi, Silvermoon Oyabun + Coin String

Sukuratchi

Wakasu Akuma

Okkete San

Tsubaki, Rose of Jima

Saki, Rose of Jima

Card – Inside Information (1)

Turn 1 Darkness is activated. Tra-Peng makes his way to the neutral zone controlling it with ease with Yusha not far behind. The Cave Bat flies up the right flank to threaten the Syndicate zone and Wu-Zang, Zung Fu and the Brute gather at the Wave zone preparing for the two Roses that advance quickly towards it. Scenario points: 3 – 1.

Turn 2 Okkete San, lost without Sukuratchi who has gone to hunt the Cave Bat, goes mad and attacks Tra-Peng in the middle who side steps away out of the zone. Yusha moves in and tosses the annoying chicken away and Tra Peng follows up but is not able to finish it off. Yusha then secures and defends the neutral zone against Manu, who's attempt to get there first was stopped by a snare, with wounds inflicted on both sides. On the right the Cave Bat, while avoiding Sukuratchi, is trying to threaten Akuma who is holding the Syndicate zone alone. At the Wave zone the Roses close in and there is a general use of Ki abilities to create chaos while preparing to strike. Zung Fu reveals Tsubaki but neither on them take any damage. A Bakemono Spearman is summoned to support as Wu-Zang starts to make his way to the center. Scenario points: 6 – 2. First victory point goes to the Wave.

Turn 3 Tra-Peng is forced to act first in the middle side stepping away from Okkete who just got up but yet again fails to kill the annoying chicken. As the fighting starts at the Wave zone things begin to look good for the bakemono as an outnumbered Tsubaki is killed early. Sukuratchi catches the Cave Bat on the right flank and manages to put some wound on it but a long range curse from Wu-Zang turns the table completely and the Cave Bat kills Sukuratchi outright in the follow up activation. Then, suddenly things turn again as Manu, with the help of Harukichis rerolls, manages to kill Yusha in the middle. Tra-Peng attempts to save the situation by exhausting Manu but Harukichi moves up and secures the neutral zone for the Syndicate killing an exhausted Wu-Zang in the process. As salt in the wound Saki sneaks around and contests the Wave zone. Scenario points: 6 – 5.

Turn 4 is a chaotic mess, the Wave zone is secured by Zung Fu after Saki is revealed, outnumbered and then killed by the Bakemono Spearman. The Brute runs up towards the middle, is met by Okkete, the Brute kills the chicken, which uses last stand and kills the Brute in it's follow-up activation. The Cave Bat charges Harukichi in the back but fails to hurt him at all. Tra-Peng, still alive, can not do much to contest the neutral zone but Manu, on the other hand, also fails to accomplish anything. Akuma, the 1 point ferret, keeps sitting undisturbed controlling the Syndicate zone. At the end of the turn the chicken is finally taken of the table. Scenarion points 7 – 8. Second victory point goes to the Syndicate.

Turn 5 as things are looking grim the direction of the game turns again. Manu is killed by the Cave Bat after a failed attempts at killing it in one blow leaving him open for a deadly counter attack. With Manu suddenly gone Tra-Peng and the Cave Bat manage to make short work of Harukichi as he defends the neutral zone from capture. Scenarion points 8 – 9.

Turn 6. With only Akuma left on the field for the Syndicate Tra-Peng secures the neutral zone and much waiting ensues. Scenario points 11 – 10. The last vistory point goes to the Wave giving the Savage Wave a 2 – 1 win.

MVM

Wu-Zang for landing a success lvl 5 curse on Sukuratchi.

Harukichi for taking and holding the neutral zone granting the Syndicate that second victory point.

----

Savage Wave vs Prefecture of Ryu on The Envoy.

Matsu Takashi

Hanso + Battle Plans

Ryu Yarimen S

Ryu Yarimen G

Isamu + Healing Balm

Mikio

The Ryu Yarimen S and the Tribal Brute were nominated VIM.

Turn 1. Both the forces advance towards the enemy. Yusha and the Brute in the middle, Tra-Peng, and Wu-Zang on the right and the Cave Bat and Zung Fu on the left. Tra-Peng takes a very central strategic position behind some fence and summons a Bakemono Spearman to strenghten the flank. The Brute is safely positioned behind Yusha. By the end of the turn the Waves forces are spread like a L trying to flank the Prefecture forces on both sides. Then Matsu makes her move and manages to blast the Cave Bat for 2 wounds at max range, after movement through cover. Pretty impressive.

Turn 2 begins with Matsu following up, she moves towards Yusha and slams him with a range attack which prones both him and the Brute. The Cave Bat, angry about the situation, charges Matsu in the back, killing her outright. The Bat soon follows her to her grave though as Hanso and Isamu outnumbers and destroys it, being too much out of the way for rescue. Meanwhile Wu-Zang sneaks up next to Tra-Peng and with this follow up activation he lands 5 poison(1) counters in the Ryu Yarimen S face. On the far right flank Ryu Yarimen G is tied up by the Bakemono Spearman and in the middle Mikio is advancing on Yusha. Yusha gets up before he reaches him though and makes his own move attacking and throwing Mikio away from the poor and still quite prone brute. Damage dealt to the VIMs at end of turn: 1 - 0.

Turn 3 begins with Mikio getting up, Yusha advances on Mikio and throws him into Hanso to prone them both. Isamu moves to protect the Ryu Yarimen S preparing to use his Healing Balm. On the left Zung Fu shadow walks in and moves to lock the prone Hanso in combat acutally managing to hurt him in the process. Wu-Zang lands a curse on the Ryu Yarimen S who, also stunned by Tra-Peng, is afraid to enter the fray and stays put. On the far right the Bakemono Spearman and the Ryu Yarimen G cancel each other out. With the Brute still safe and back on it's feet behing Yusha the overlooked Tra-Peng decides to make a daring end of turn move, moving past the exhausted defenders he manages to engage Ryu Yarimen S and due to the previous curse and some boosting he inflicts 1 precious wound giving the Wave the first victory point. Damage dealt to the VIMs at end of turn: 4 – 0.

Turn 4 signals the downfall. Hanso, now back on his feat, easily dispatches of Zung Fu in one go and moves to challenge Yusha who is still holding his ground in the middle, the Bakemono Spearman on the far right is killed by the Yarimen who proceeds to flank the Wave forces from the other side. Tra-Peng is killed by Yarimen S while Isamu uses the Healing Balm twice on him to get him back on stable health, which proves to be just in time as Wu-Zang promptly lands another 6 poison(1) counters on him. Seeing the field is lost the Brute decides to be smart and starts to run away in an arc following the quite empty left side of the table. Damage dealt to the VIMs at end of turn: 6 – 0.

Turn 5 begins with Yusha, now very alone in the middle, engaging an already wounded Hanso. Hanso is killed just before Yusha gets swamped by Mikio and Isamu. On the right Wu-Zang is killed by Yarimen G and Yarimen S with a load of poison advances past Yusha towards the Wave deployment zone. Alone but smart the Brute continues it's arc past the Ryu forces but is way to slow to make it around the table and all of the smartness is for naught. Damage dealt to the VIMs at end of turn: 8 – 0. The dice is rolled and determines that the game ends giving the last victory point to the Prefecture and giving the Wave a 2 – 1 win.

MVM

Wu-Zang for causing all the VIM damage and allowing Tra-Peng to get the first victory point.

Isamu for keeping the VIM alive to score the last victory point.

Tournament MVM, Wu-Zang. Which was quite suprising since I had forced myself to include him as part of my strategy to handle the Envoy scenario. I usually have a hard time with VIM based scenarios and felt desperate to try something bold. Which, as you have read above, worked better than expected. This will earn him consideration in warbands to come.

Excellent report!
I notice that you used throw attack with Yusha a lot.  It's a fantastic little ability, isn't it?

I also did not realise that Zung-Fu has 2MS.  I was curious why you had him out on the flank, but that was under the assumption he was 1MS.  That's interesting for 2 rice more, you gain that extra ki for the horde.  Did you use any of his ki feats?

Didn't read the report (but i will do tomoroww), but you basically used the same list i was talking about in the savage wave theorycrafting (and people were arguing against it), i'm happy about that. :)

I did not use his Ki feats at all during the course of the three games. I could have on Idols but had to prioritize other actions and neither of the other scenarios provided an opportunity. But, as I have mentioned earlier, this is how I usually use him and it is the 2 melee dice (vs Wu-Zang & Okina & Oto) that make him viable.

It is very close to the last list of yours, removing the Nian, exchanging a bakemono for a brute and adding the Bat card. I was also arguing against it because of Wu-Zang but as you will notice when you read the report I might have been too harsh. The model still has a lot to prove but at least it can be useful under the right conditions.

I see Wu Zang as a way to reach 5-6Ki generated in the first turn without having to buy 2 bakemonos and thus saving 1 rice. But the spells imho are good and he has force of will.

good list, some nice tactical play too, nice to see the wave used well:) you managed to hold it together when it inevitably starts to crumble which is one of the tipping points in a Wave game, I manage it sometimes but not often enough:) You don't really mention cloud of bats in the report- how did that work for you?

Nice reading. And congratulations! Nice to see a great Wave player. I liked the list also, without an horde of models, just the necesary. Very good report, thank you ;)

You noticed the trend then. All of the games start great and then fall apart. Game 2 I somehow, and probably through luck, manage to turn it around but both game 1 and 3 it was a slaughter from turn 4 and on. The Cloud of Bats didn't have that much of an effect in any of the games. I need more practise on how to use it well.
